essential investment pieces: the ultimate sustainable + ethical brand guide

April 20, 2019 Aspen Murray
Pile of clothing

Hey hey lovely readers! I am hoping all is well. So, I don't know about you, but recently I've been starting to bring out my spring and summer pieces. It's been AWHILE since I've seen some of these beauties and it's got me excited for all of the gorgeous outfits ahead...and the fact that I won't have to hide them under an enormous coat!

With summer comes new life to fashion. With this new life comes the tremendous effort to completely refresh our wardrobes and to start over and revamp our entire identities and pack our things and get on the next plane out of town an--

Mmm, that might've been too far. Let's just say exam season's gotten rough. ANYWAY, where I was going with that lil ramble was that, although you should totally try out new trends and dress in whatever makes you feel the best, you shouldn't do this in a way that hurts the environment or the people who make our clothes.

Shrt and dress on clothing rack

That's why today, for Part Two of the SUSTAINABLE WARDROBE MAKEOVER SERIES, I'm going to be talking a bit about how to avoid doing that. In the series' last post, I talked about refining your style identity so you actually know what you're shopping for.

Therefore, today I'll be focusing more on buying less, but buying better. I am a firm believer that we should avoid buying new as much as possible (the last thing our world needs is more items for sale) but that when we really desire something, we need to be supporting amazing social enterprises.

More specifically, this post is going to focus on Essential Investment Pieces. We've all heard about basics, and the idea that they're "the building blocks to our wardrobe", but what does that really mean? What constitutes one of those items? I'll break that all down for you. Moreover, I'll also give you my fave brand recommendations for these amazing items!

Pile of clothing

But before I dive into this post, one last post callback -- if you've decided you DO want to make some space in your closet for these new investments, be very conscious about how you get rid of those old clothes. You may not know it, but clothing donations are a huge social and environmental problem. This might seem overwhelming, but fret not! I wrote a post here about how to do better :)

Without further ado, THE POST!

tops

tees

For a plain t-shirt, my go-to's are either Known Supply or United By Blue. Quality-wise, these pieces are each 100% cotton, which is essential to look for in a nice tee.

Known Supply // Krochet Kids

Known Supply is an apparel company which also houses the brand Krochet Kids underneath of it.

I have and recommend the basic Standard Women's Tee, available in Heather Grey on Krochet Kids for $20 and in a multitude of other colours on Known Supply for $28. I currently only own it in black and white, but plan to grab a few more soon!

girl wearing t-shirt

Ethics/sustainability-wise, what's really cool about Known Supply and Krochet Kids is that all their items are made in women's cooperatives in India, Peru, and Uganda. Moreover, each item is hand-signed by the maker! Another thing which makes them really unique is that you can get most of their apparel hand-stitched with anything you'd like. I'm looking into picking up a custom Ethigirl tee soon! ;)

Also, you can get 10% off your next order with Known Supply // Krochet Kids using this link and the discount code ETHIGIRL!

United By Blue

I own a couple of UBB tees: two of the Women's Standard Pocket Tees, in grey and in green, (which retail for $38 each) and one of the graphic tops (which range, but cost around the same). What I love specifically about the pocket tees is that they have the pocket, and also that the sleeves have a cuff sewn right in! I always cuff t-shirt sleeves anyway, so this is a nice little detail. The shirts are also really flattering when tucked into anything high-waisted, which is how I always wear them.

UBB strives to make everything locally, or responsibly overseas, and with sustainable materials. They also clean one pound of trash from waterways with every purchase! Truuuly social entrepreneurship.

sweaters

So many knits and other beautiful sweaters can be easily thrifted. They're almost too easy to find! All of my favourite turtlenecks, one of which is 100% wool, is secondhand. Therefore, I totally recommend you try that out first.

However, if you're not able to find what you're looking for, my three suggestions are to purchase one of Fjallraven's gorgeous knits, a wool knit Irish Sweater, or to look at Patagonia's versatile selection. All three of these are insanely good quality that will most definitely last you a lifetime - I would bet my life on it.

Fjallraven

I own the Ovik Women's Knit Sweater in a red and purple style which no longer appears to be available online. It's extremely soft, extremely warm, and has gorgeous elbow patches and the Fjallraven fox logo on one of the arms! This sweater has been an excellent investment that I was lucky to catch on sale at a local outdoors shop. As a general rule, Fjallraven items are HARD to find for cheap, and that's because of the amazing quality which each item is made with.

flatlay of winter clothes

Fjallraven is overall an outdoor goods company, meaning that sustainability is sort of a no-brainer for them: why would they want to hurt the thing which their products are made for enjoying? They offer a repair program, and they strive to use materials which are locally-produced and better for the environment.

Patagonia

Where do I even begin with Patagonia? It is one of my fave companies and truly one of the best models for a large, yet still sustainable and ethical company which exists. I own a multitude of products from Patagonia, but the one I will feature here is the Women's Better Sweater 1/4 Zip. Mine is in olive green, which is a colour they don't currently have in stock.

This sweater is excellent. It keeps in the heat so well, making it great as a layer for winter or even a substitute for a spring jacket. However you wear it, you're sure to be both warm and comfortable.

girl wearing sweater and jeans

Moreover, like I mentioned above, Patagonia is super sustainable and ethical. They strive to use recycled or reclaimed fabrics or materials, to certify their sewing practices Fair Trade USA, they are a B Corporation, and they seek out factories overseas whose values match their own and then foster long-term partnerships with them.

Locally-Made Irish Sweaters - Aran Sweater Market

My last suggestion in the sweater department is a 100% wool knit cardigan from the Aran Sweater Market. I've had mine for over two years and I am still in love with it. My whole family owns these insanely well-made pieces that are built to last a lifetime. They're also extremely warm, yet still moisture wicking, as they were made to last intensely cold or windy conditions!

These are great to throw over a nice dress or blouse, or can be buttoned up and enjoyed on their own with jeans/pants. You can also purchase pullover crewneck sweaters, or many other styles. Their entire selection is available online.

Wool is a great material, and it's also all spun locally off the West Coast of Ireland, where the sweaters too are knit.

jeans

Ah yes, jeans. An item we'll all perpetually struggle with. The biggest thing with finding a great, long-lasting pair of denim is to try on a lot of different pairs. The worst thing you can do for yourself is only try on one or two.

Jeans are something you wear everyday. Do yourself a favour and make sure you love them - they do WONDERS to pull any outfit together.

Vintage Levis

What's that? Vintage Levis? Never heard of her! Just kidding. Vintage is alwaysss more sustainable, and Levis are such a hot item right now. Put them together and you're both sustainable AND hot ;)

You can walk into any vintage shop and find these. Now, the price tag on them is guaranteed to be a bit steep - we're talking around $50 at the least for a good quality pair, anywhere up to $100. But damn. I PROMISE you that when you slide on the right pair, you'll understand why they cost that much and you will do yourself a favour and you will buy them.

I have two pairs of vintage boyfriend Levi's, which tend to be the most popular. They're characterized by a mile-high waist, sometimes a button fly (in the case of 501's), and a straight leg. The denim will also have a very high cotton percentage and very little spandex. That's what you want for a long-lasting set.

If you're looking for where to buy these online, you can find them at places like ASOS and Urban Outfitters, as well as secondhand marketplaces like Depop or even eBay. Just be sure there's a return policy - you might not like the way you fit, and that's a lot of $$ to drop on a risk!

dresses

Mata Traders

Mata is an amazing company with gorgeous and eccentric dresses, tops, and jewelry. I have two dresses from Mata Traders, both of which are amazing quality and great investment pieces. I love the fun prints and high-quality fabrics and details that go into each item.

Their items tend to be on the expensive side, with dresses costing anywhere from $70-$100. However, I promise you that if you pick the right one, you'll be wearing it all the time. They have more and less statement-y dresses, so you can ensure you choose what suits you and your needs the most.

girl posing in dress

Each of Mata's items are made in a women's cooperative in India and Nepal, where employees are empowered with sewing skills and paid fair wages in safe conditions.

The dress I'm wearing here isn't for sale anymore as I bought it a couple of years ago, but I really also love this vintage-inspired one for summer!

conclusion

And there you have it! A master list of places where you can buy essential investment pieces ranging from tees to sweaters to jeans to dresses. I wholeheartedly recommend any and all of these great companies and choices. Try any of them out? Have any of your own suggestions? Let me know below!

With love and sustainability,

slow fall fashion: ethigirl's lookbook

Y A Y  F O R  F A L L ! ! !

girl sitting on bench in park

Wow wow wow I used the HEADER option for those words because it is absolutely, positively my FAVOURITE time of year. I am so excited that it's finally here! If I'm being completely honest, though (and I'm not going to try not to be because my roommates would totally call me out if I wasn't!) I've been in fall mode for several weeks now. Oh yes...the acoustic indie Spotify playlists have been made, the fresh cookies and cinnamon buns have been baked, a cute scarf has been thrifted, and I am just too far off the deep end to ever return. (Please do not remind me of the iced-over wasteland that we will be experiencing far too soon. I am not prepared and I'm definitely ignoring the reality.)

It's not that I don't like summer - I love it! But there's just something so magical and romantic and EXTREMELY cozy about fall. Candles, tea, blankets, CARDIGANS, baking, big coats, and so many other things...I absolutely adore it. And the leaves!!

And as well - probably my favourite part of this incredible season - THE FASHION. I think fall is the loveliest for getting dressed in the morning (except for when you wear a warm coat in the morning and then once the sun comes out you reduce into a pile of sweat. But just let me be idealistic okay).

Picture this: you awake to the smell of cinnamon buns fresh outta the oven. You throw off your eighteen blankets and immediately put on fuzzy socks and a hoodie. After you eat a cinnamon bun you adorn yourself in a beanie, cardigan, tights, and ankle boots, (reusable) mug of tea in hand. You are ready. You are autumnally-prepared. You are thriving.

Did it feel like you were there? My elementary school English teachers did tell me I was good at descriptive writing. ;) Anyway, now that I have set the scene, you are ready for this post. It's all about the pursuit of adorable fall fashion and how to craft ethical, sustainable outfits for every autumnal occasion! Grab a latte and a blanket. I hope this helps you and inspires you to live your best (pumpkin-filled) life this fall!

Also, an extra special thank you to my two friends Mollie and Psalm for contributing so much to this post. Mollie took beautiful photos (and let Psalm and I try clumsily to do the same), and the two of them both love thrifting and shopping slow so they volunteered their Sunday afternoon to shoot photos of their favourite fall outfits!

I've also linked my fall Spotify playlist below!!! It's got all my all-time faves and some new discoveries. If you have any suggestions for autumnal music please also send it my way! (WOW! GETTIN HIGH TECH (I literally just hit a button on Spotify to achieve this but STILL PROUD OF MYSELF)!)

Fall Look #1: A STYLISH DAY AT SCHOOL

Aspen: I love a cozy flannel, and this one is a secondhand Fjallraven BABE that I found for such a great deal on Depop. You can find the same one new here. I tucked it into a pair of boyfriend Levi's which I purchased prior to my slow fashion switch. To finish the look I've got on my number one companion (my Kanken backpack), some cozy socks from United By Blue, and I'm borrowing Mollie's Blundstones!

girl posing in front of brick wall in outfit

Psalm: My dear friend and this! amazing! look! Psalm has paired a gorgeously-vintage Levi's denim jacket with a basic white tee, then added some thrifted plaid pants that give off very chic prep school vibes. Seriously, she is School of ROCKING this outfit! To polish it all off, she's wearing a pair of Matt & Nat loafers! You can find a similar pair here.

I don't know about you, but at my university, as soon as I walk onto campus I immediately feel inferior...people do the MOST when it comes to outfits. But I actually love it! These beautiful individuals are constantly providing me with inspiration for new ~looks~ from these beautiful individuals.

The entire ensemble is totally something you could wear to school and be comfortable, casual, but still ON FIRE. As well, a tip from Psalm: clothing swaps!!! At our university there are tons of buy and sell groups on Facebook where tons of very fashionable people sell their items for really cheap prices.

We also often have actual clothing swap events, where attendees are required to bring a couple of their own items to contribute and then they are welcome to take as many others home with them as they'd like! It's completely free and reduced so much textile waste!

She also found a lot of her items from friends or even her mom who didn't use them any longer and felt as though she'd get more love out of them. What's so special about this tip is the idea of fashion as a social and communal thing! Sharing clothing and bonding over fashion can be a great way to "shop" (sometimes without even spending anything) sustainably and have an amazing time while doing it.

Fall Look #2: ROMANTIC DINNERS (or other assorted "dress-up" occasions)

girl smiling wearing fur coat

Mollie: Even if your love life is in shambles (RIP) there is still always an excuse to dress up and feel GOOD! Heck, one of my best pals had a housewarming party last week and she made the dress code black tie just so everyone had an excuse to look nice. It reminded me that I do not get to wear heels and red lipstick as much as I would like to!

Okay, so the key to a FALL dressy outfit is to pair it with an amazing coat/blazer. (Unless, of course, you're going for the classic post-date "I'm cold" move to get your romantic conquest to offer theirs ;).) But if instead you decide, no, I'm gonna be independent and save my OWN self from this autumn evening's chill, make sure you bring your jacket!

And Mollie did the MOST for this tip with this beautiful fur coat! One thing you should know about Mollie - her mom works in a thrift store and is constantly picking up new things for her!!! I, personally, am quite jealous, as this coat is one of those items.

Underneath the coat is a thrifted dress with black detailing around the boatneck and sleeves. It has a gorgeous grey, pink, and blue print. I love this dress because of its versatility - you could also definitely wear this to work with a blazer and tights and look so put-together!

Mollie has finished off the look with a pair of strappy black heels, making it truly elegant and unforgettable. She is truly date (or other formal event) ready!

One thing that Mollie and I have spoken about is the stories behind thrifted items. When we're thrifting, we don't always know where things come from, or the stories they hold, but it's so special to think about what their origins might be! And sometimes we do know. For instance, Mollie's heels in this outfit were made in Italy, and she has a half-sari scarf from India. The dress she thrifted and wore to prom was also vintage from the 60s!

These are items from everywhere that we'd likely never find if it weren't for thrifting, and it's crazy to think of the journey they travel to end up with us and to hopefully be well-loved for a lifetime!

Fall Look #3: LAZY SUNDAYS...

girl posing on bed with mug of tea
girl reading book on bed drinking tea

Who doesn't love these?! I adore those amazing autumn Sunday afternoons where you just sort of get cozy with your biggest sweater, softest leggings, warmest mug of tea, and favourite book/show/study subject (maybe the latter isn't so much a fave). Everybody needs this important self-care time whenever they can get it, and setting aside a few of those hours can really reset everything.

Psalm: This cozy friend has paired a freshly-made mug of tea (actually made just for these photos because #aesthetic) with an extremely soft, extremely comfy striped crewneck sweater which she thrifted with some also comfy leggings. It's a simple look but if this doesn't inspire you to stay in this weekend, I don't know what will! Also, how is her smile THIS radiant?!

An additional side note! The black blanket on my bed is so soft, so wooly, and from United By Blue! I think it inspires the outdoorsiest of vibes, and you can find it here if you're interested.

Fall Look #4: AFTERNOONS SPENT OUTDOORS

girl sitting on bench in park

Fall is filled to the brim with opportunities to embark outside and take in the crispness of this magical season. Whether it be a visit to a pumpkin patch or an apple orchard, a coffee with a friend on a park bench, a relaxing hike, or simply a walk to clear your head, please take every chance you get to enjoy it.

This last outfit, I must say, has got to be my favourite - which partially has to do with where we traveled to take the accompanying photos. We visited the most golden of parks in my favourite part of the Plateau (the neighbourhood in which I live) - Square Saint-Louis! Although the light was quickly dimming and it was extremely chilly, the big beautiful streetlights were gorgeous and the squirrels were so cute and we were surrounded by the oldest, most amazing houses there are! I'm sorry to ramble on but I just love where I live and I'm so thankful to be here, feeling so swept up by the beauty of it all.

Aspen: In my look, I'm wearing a chambray button-up top that I purchased from thredUP, as well as a pair of thrifted army-green mom jeans from Depop.

A quick story about the jeans - they were too small! Well, I could wear them, but they crushed my insides, and I respect my organs so I decided I needed to stretch them out. I did this by throwing them in the wash, and then putting them on before I hung them to dry (yes, damp jeans - as uncomfortable as it sounds). I then proceeded to do squats, toe touches, and honestly just some crazy air kicks and dance moves for about half an hour before I got tired and hoped for the best. And actually, after I tried them on again, they fit much better!

Finally, to "tie" the look together, I'm wearing a thrifted orange and black (ooh, Halloween-y?!) bandana around my neck that I just knotted twice. I am so obsessed with the way it looks.

Well, that's all from me for today, and for ETHIGIRL's first post in my fall series! Thank you so very much for reading this, for looking at the pictures, and for supporting me. Just to be sappy for a moment, whenever someone reads or comments or shares, or even comes up to me and tells me that they like what I'm writing, I always do an internal happy dance! So thank you a million times.

With so much love and sustainability,

Ethigirl <3
